On Money

by Jeff Nagel on November 28, 2015

If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late” (some startup guy).

WoW, can we relate to that quote.

Most of us when starting a project do not cover all the bases before we start. Hindsight is always 20/20, but foresight rarely is.

nullSo, as we look forward to our continued gatherings once a month, we want to make clear what was muddy regarding the subject of money, since we’ve had a few inquiries around our costs and expectations. We hope to bring some clarity in this article.

Calling OAMC the “$2 Church” was, and still is, meant to be a playful tag line. However, we communicated something that isn’t factually true. In reality, there are real bills to pay. Let’s revisit some basic concepts of OMAC.

We do not pay leaders. We will never pay leaders. But we do pay people who provide services such as building rental, maintaining the website, handling the day to day operations of online communications, and some musicians whom we may invite and pay them from time to time. We want to respect their time and talent. It will be modest, but it will be done.

We have to pay rent of $250 per month (BTW it’s normally $500), liability insurance, a onetime damage deposit ($500), coffee, food, website domains, and stipend for Community Curator ($150), which brings us to about $500-$600 per month. When it comes to church planting, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this. We, as part of the hosting team have covered the costs for the first two months.

It’s important that we own our failure to communicate clearly about money, because OAMC is a place that seeks to develop emotionally mature adults who follow Jesus. It’s just as important that we give you this information, so you are able to make your own giving decisions.

We will continue to be both low-key and playful about the topic of money at OAMC. We hope that you will consider giving to the operating expenses of OAMC. However, you can give to any worthy group that you sense the Lord is directing you to give to. You can share your offerings for OAMC by giving during our regular OAMC gathering or via a Go Fund Me page that will be set up to accept donations and you will be notified about via email. Remember, we do not provide tax receipts for giving.
